Erica L. Auster

Erica Auster is the oldest of three sisters and was born and raised in Farmington Hills, Michigan. As a child, she had a dream of being a sports sideline reporter, which was likely due to being a loyal fan of the Wolverines, Lions, Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings from a young age. She attended her first Rose Bowl when she was just two years old and was even in utero during the 1978 NCAA Basketball Finals. Erica studied Communications at the University of Michigan from 1996 to 2000 and received her bachelor’s degree in 2000. She then accepted a position at a small public relations firm in Ann Arbor.

In 2001, Erica started law school at Wayne State University in Detroit, where she was a member of the Moot Court Team, elected as the Director of Oral Advocacy in 2002. She also worked at the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic from 2001 until 2002, assisting probation and parole violators who had been admitted into drug rehabilitation programs. Erica received her law degree in 2004 and was admitted to practice in the Michigan State and Federal Courts in November 2004, with her Uncle Mike by her side as her sponsor.

Erica began her legal career as an associate attorney with Even & Franks in Muskegon, practicing in the areas of commercial litigation and real estate transactions. After a short time, she realized that her true passion was helping people during one of the most difficult times of their lives. Erica is compassionate, loyal, and attentive, and she knew she could use these traits to help people through their divorce and other difficult family law matters. In June 2005, she accepted a position with a small Grand Rapids family law firm. From the start, Erica knew she had found her passion – listening to people facing difficult choices and helping them navigate through to their future.

Erica’s entrepreneurial spirit is a natural characteristic inherited from her father. She was thrilled to learn that Jennifer Johnsen shared her dream of opening a boutique family law firm. The two opened Johnsen & Wikander in August 2006. Four years later, Erica became a founding member of Velzen, Johnsen & Wikander. Erica was excited to rebuild the original firm of Johnsen Wikander in 2017. Erica and Jennifer have been helping clients through their most difficult journey for the last 17 years.

Erica’s goal is to vigorously and compassionately represent her clients and protect their interests and legal rights. She recognizes that each client has different needs and is committed to providing individual attention and candid legal advice. Erica listens, informs, and helps her clients navigate difficult family transitions to create the future they deserve. Having been through a divorce herself, she understands the emotional trauma, the complexities of co-parenting relationships, and, most importantly, the impact the transition has on one’s future.

In her free time, Erica enjoys spinning on her Peloton, traveling (especially visiting her parents, sisters, and nieces and nephews), sharing laughs with friends, watching her Michigan Wolverines and Detroit Lions, attending her teenage children’s sporting events (hockey, lacrosse, and tennis), and playing with her loyal fur babies (a black lab and pug).
